In 1959 there was a significant change in the Camp leadership as William
L. Atwood was elected Commander. He brought with him a whole new staff
of officers:
| William L. Atwood.....................Commander
Hall Wingfield........................1st Lt. Commander Herbert C. Phillips Jr...............2nd Lt. Commander Alexander C. Nivin.........................Adjutant Phil Brumbaugh.............................Treasurer Cyril Clemens............................Quartermaster W. William Dalton...................Judge Advocate John C. Mosby III....................Color Sergeant George W. Tucker........................Historian Rev. L. F. Martin..........................Chaplain Dr. Drew Luten.............................Surgeon Wm. W. Crowdus........................Counselor |
In his open letter, addressed to the Camp, Mr. Atwood stressed the importance
of enthusiasm, attendance at meetings and participation at Camp functions
by the membership. “When we joined the SCV it was with a proud attitude
of heritage and comradeship, and a sincere desire To Keep Straight In History,
The Record of Their Words and Deeds. In recent years we have not lived
up to this motto, nor fulfilled its obligation. With the approaching Centennial
years (1961-1965) we have both a challenge and an obligation.” Mr. Atwood
then outlines the goals of his administration:
1. An all-out membership campaign to double membership within the next
year.
2. A program of events, meetings and efforts to bring the recognition
and prestige to the Camp which it deserves.
3. Building a treasury, through membership, social activities, and
donations to carry out our work.
“All of these things must be done if our Camp is to survive.”
This was a very ambitious program. Mr. Atwood had just joined the SCV
in 1958, and was determined to take charge immediately, and solve problems
that had plagued the organization since its inception. Another new member
in 1958 was Col. D. H. Hundley, (Camp Commander 1967)

There are no dates given for their periods of service, and the sequence
is in disagreement with several other lists that are available, but it
is reprinted here for your scrutiny.
